About 38.4 percent of fractures are finger fractures. Your finger could be broken and you wouldn’t even know it. That’s because you can still move around the broken finger.
If your finger is injured, in most cases you will want to seek medical attention as soon as possible. You also want to make sure you’re doing everything possible to prevent infection or aggravation.
Your hands are one of the hardest working parts of your body, which means they’re also one of the most vulnerable to injury. Broken fingers often occur as a result of falling with the hand, catching a ball without proper protection, careless use of power tools and other equipment, and accidental trapping of the finger while closing the door. In addition, hand injuries are one of the most common workplace injuries in the United States, second only to back injuries.
Whenever your finger is injured, you may experience pain, swelling, or stiffness when trying to move the affected finger. However, there are some telltale signs of fracture:
The fracture is very swollen
The affected finger looks unnatural or deformed
There’s tenderness and bruising at the fracture site
You have difficulty moving the affected finger completely
Fortunately, most broken finger bones can be treated without the need for surgery. Your fracture may require a splint or cast to protect it from further injury and ensure that it heals in the right place. Don’t be surprised if your splint also suppresses the finger next to the injured finger — this will provide additional support while your injured finger heals.
Finger SAM Splints are one of the simplest and most versatile first aid devices available, so there should be at least one in every outdoor first aid kit. The soft, malleable strips of aluminum sandwiched in the foam become fairly rigid once they form a 3D shape, and the more complex the shape, the harder they become.
They are by no means the fixed gold standard, but because they are small, lightweight, easy to use, reusable, impervious to water, heat, dirt, have no moving parts, can be cut with scissors and are ray permeable, they cannot match the value of anything else under £12.
In some cases, including severe fractures or more complex fracture types, be sure to seek immediate treatment and seek medical attention if needed. Whenever you are involved in an injury that could endanger the safety of your hand or fingers, be sure to use the correct safety equipment and ensure that everything possible is done to prevent infection or aggravation of the injury.
